The Port of Windsor had a record year in 2013, surpassing the 6 million tonne mark for the first time since the closure of the CP rail ferry in the late 1980’s. Total cargo increased by 10.5% on a year-to-year basis reaching 6,029,393 tonnes this past season.
Fuelled by road construction across the region, shipments passing through the Port of Windsor are on a record pace and could break a mark set in 2006.
Port authority CEO David Cree said that the record of 5.778 million tonnes set seven years ago could be broken this year because of an increase in liquid asphalt shipped through the recently expanded Sterling Marine Fuels Terminal. As well, construction of the Herb Gray Parkway has generated record volumes of construction aggregates through the Lafarge Canada Terminal.
Canadian Sailings Magazine, on of the most highly respected logistics and marine publications in the country, recently announced the results of its review of the performance of the 18 Canada Port Authority ports for 2012. This includes all of the major ports in the country from Vancouver on the west coast to Halifax on the east coast and the largest Great Lakes ports including Thunder Bay, Toronto, Hamilton and Windsor.
April 4, 2013 Windsor, ON – The M.V. ISA was officially welcomed into the Port of Windsor as the first overseas vessel arrival (salty) for the 2013 shipping and navigation season, following its docking at Morterm Terminals on March 26, 2013. The Windsor Port Authority represented by Controller, Christine Pare, Morterm Limited Vice President, Theresa Boutette and Windsor Shipping Agency, Robin Waugh officially welcomed Captain Tomasz Molinda to the Port of Windsor. The ship offloaded raw sugar before continuing up the Great Lakes to complete its journey.
The Port of Windsor experienced a solid growth in total cargo handled in 2012, with overall tonnage volumes increasing from the previous year by approximately 7.5% to 5,455, 655 tonnes.
David Cree, President and C.E.O of the Windsor Port Authority noted that “the increase is great news and is attributable to the surge in construction aggregate shipments due to an increased demand from major construction projects, particularly the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway”.
Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay has officially announced construction of a $36.4-million “state of the art” waterfront mooring for Windsor’s HMCS Hunter.
Speaking at the Hunter’s Second Word War era “stone frigate” on Ouellette Avenue Thursday, MacKay said the historic building had served its purpose well but the facility was in need of an upgrade to be achieved through the construction of a $15.7 million 5,805-square-metre building at Mill Cove Marina on the Detroit River in Sandwich Towne, with work to begin in the spring. Total value of the upgrade of the facility and equipment is set at $36.4 million .
The Port of Windsor is proud to announce the arrival to the Port of Windsor of The Baie St. Paul, Canada Steamship Lines’ (CSL) first of four new Trillium Class self-unloading Lakers and the most technologically advanced ship to enter the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system. The award-winning vessel will be docking at the Southwestern Sales Corporation Limited west dock located at 35 Prospect Street, Windsor at 08:00hrs EDT on December 18, 2012, completing her maiden voyage that began in Jiangyin, China.
Plans for a $400-million double-stack Detroit River rail tunnel are pushing ahead despite Ottawa’s focus on getting the $1-billion DRIC bridge built first.

April 11, 2011 Windsor, ON – The Fednav vessel M.V Federal Leda was officially welcomed into the Port of Windsor as the first overseas vessel arrival (salty) for the 2011 shipping and navigation season, following its docking at Morterm Terminals on April 5, 2011. The Windsor Port Authority Harbourmaster Peter Berry, Morterm Limited Theresa Boutette and Windsor Shipping Agency, Robin Waugh officially welcomed Captain Rafal Kapuscinski aboard the ship. The ship offloaded steel before continuing up the Great Lakes to complete it’s journey.
