Media Release – Give a Smile. Get a Smile.

Port Windsor has purchased 100 dozen Tim Hortons Smile Cookies to bring smiles to the 846 essential port workers who have persevered over the summer to ensure the goods critical to our local economy continue to flow.  All proceeds from the purchase of the cookies will support the vital programmes of the John McGivney Children’s Centre and W.E. Care for Kids.

Port Windsor named Marine Industry Trusted Partner for COVID-19

Port Windsor is the first Port in Canada to be named a Marine Trusted Partner by the Chamber of Marine Commerce.

The Marine Trusted Partners programme sets out best practices put in place to protect ship crews, customers, service providers and the public from risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It covers preventive measures before boarding ships and prevention while onboard, as well as measures for managing a sick person on board.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce is in regular communication with federal government transport and health officials to ensure a coordinated approach that helps to protect employees and stakeholders who interact with the marine sector. We are providing our ship owners, ports and other members information on the latest measures and best practices coming from federal and provincial government departments here in North America and through the International Chamber of Shipping.

From the beginning of the outbreak, Port Windsor has taken several measures to ensure its staff have up-to-date information and knowledge about the COVID-19 virus. Work arrangements were modified to allow staff to work from home where possible, or provided with enhanced protocols and PPE to protect them and other workers while performing their duties. The Port provided all operators with the most current information to protect port-side staff, and how to engage safely with visiting ships. Foreign ships coming into port are tracked continuously for the health conditions of their crew.

More than 800 masks were recently distributed to all persons who work in Port Windsor each day.

We are proud of our many operators who have made the health and safety of all workers in Port Windsor a priority. They have all taken steps to ensure that Port Windsor remains a destination of choice. This is more than about keeping the flow of essential goods and materials flowing, it’s about keeping our community safe.

A recent audit by the Marine Chamber determined that the port has successfully implemented a full range of best practices for preventative measures and processes to provide a level of trust and confidence for those dealing with Port Windsor.

Media Release: Supporting our Workers

Port Windsor has issued locally sourced, and locally produced, face masks to all 846 port workers to assist them in doing their part to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“We could have easily sourced the masks online, but it was important to Port Windsor that the masks support local companies, and local workers. After all, they are for our local workers in the Port of Windsor who continue to support our local economy throughout this COVID crisis.”

Seaway opens for the 2020 Season

March 24, 2020 – The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) marked the opening of the Seaway’s 62nd navigation season today, with the transit of the NACC Argonaut through Lock 8 on the Welland Canal.

For the Windsor Port Authority, ensuring the health and well-being of Canadians, port employees, customers, and seafarers who transit through ports is the top priority.  As such, we are working closely with the federal government and the Public Health Agency of Canada to develop and adopt government-wide practices to help protect Canadians and visitors alike.  The important thing right now is making sure we slow down the spread of COVID-19 in Canada.  We support the government’s efforts and are working hard to do our part.  We take direction from the Public Health Agency of Canada on health-related matters, and Transport Canada on marine operations. We will continue to act appropriately as the situation evolves.

Port Windsor Acting Now to Prepare for Climate Change

Port Windsor is taking initial steps to prepare and fortify its waterfront harbour infrastructure against the impacts of climate change.

The Windsor Port Authority’s Climate Change and Risk Assessment Plan will identify the risks related to climate change and its impact on the current and future conditions of the port’s assets.
